Yes, the Christmas countdown is on and we are only five and a half weeks away. Here at our house we have lots of family traditions around this holiday time, and it all goes back to my Mom. One of the things my Mother did was to make sure our Christmas Celebration was a great one. We could not always afford things at other times of the year…but she always made sure that Christmas was memorable. With bowls full of candy, trays of nuts, cookies, homemade meat pise and gifts, it was defiantly my favorite time of the year.
After getting married my husband Bud and I took the traditions we liked from each side of our family and combined them into one. We do lots of baking, decorating and sharing. Our adult children will still do advent calendars if I provide one. They all try to be home a couple of days before to let all the fun begin. It is an all day affair at our house. Gifts are opened one by one, with each of us looking on. First comes the stockings and then a big breakfast. Some years we will have our Turkey dinner on boxing day to stretch out all the love. It depends of course on everyones schedules. The other thing we do is stay in our pajamas the whole day, yes even at the dinner table. These are the times I cherish, the times I put in my memory bank to reflect on in later.
I know the stress of the hloidays can get us down, however if we just try and stretch out all that needs to be done we can avoid getting the Grinch’s. I will leave you here with a few tips my Mom passed down to me and if you have some tips to share please do in the comments below. I would love to here from you.
- prep all the food you can ahead.
- have ingredients for baking on hand so those times when you find a few extra moments you can bake one of the easier recipes.
- wrap all gifts as soon as you get home (keep a list so you do not forget what you bought)
- plan a special time for you and your significant other.
- decorate the house a little at a time.
